The "Furry People" on the Team

The two dogs on the Team are a very important part of the Team. This is a major accomplishment for them as well as for the "human people." Many people have been asking about them.

Cassie was born on March 14, 1999, and her full name is Covy Tucker Hill Cassiopeia. When she came to Joni she was just 8 weeks old and a fluffy ball of black and tan fur. It was love at first sight for Joni as she watched this puppy with big ears, long nose, and a characteristic mask around her beautiful brown eyes. When Cassie reached three months of age it was discovered that she had a "patent ductus arteriosus" - or put more simply, one of her heart valves was not functioning properly. Without surgery she would not live much longer. Joni took her to UC Davis' animal hospital where she had open heart surgery.

Wailukuke was rescued on Crow Indian reservation in Montana. They found him abandoned and chained to a fence. He was chained so tightly that he couldn't even lie down. After a couple days they decided to keep him. His full name is Chief Owashta Bishke Waliluke, which is Crow for "Traveling Dog Walking." Just imagine -- Waliluke thought he would just be going around the corner to get a treat. Instead, guess what ... he had 3,500 miles ahead of him to get that treat. Poor guy. Waliluke was about 6 months old, in good health, and is a black Lab mix. Waliluke has proven to be an exceptional walker, and romps and plays with Cassie. Waliluke will go home to Tennessee with Samantha when the Walk is over.

Mail can be sent to Lyn care of General Delivery at Post Offices along the way. Regular USPS mail is better now than E-Mail. Address the mail to all three walkers (that way any of them can pick it up at the Post Office), and underline Lyn's name so they will know who it goes to. So address your mail to: "Lyn Hanush, Samantha Hanush-Garrett or Joan Balog".
